The Convention's official Commentary makes clear that Article 49 was drafted with reference to the massive, forcible population transfers effected by Nazi Germany during World War II. Thankfully most Israeli citizens are in favor of peace and a Palestinian state. Ancient Egyptian texts call the entire levantine coastal area R-t-n-u (conventionally Retenu), which stretched along the Mediterranean coast in between modern Egypt and Turkey. If Israel had accepted the peace offer in 71, 74 or 76, which will have been substantially the same to the eventual peace offer if the Geneva accords are successful, the entire region probably would be debating farm subsidies by now.
